A man is recovering from gunshot injuries he sustained last night.  For the story, we join Reporter Vejea Alvarez.

Less than 24 hours ago this yard located on New Road in Belize was a crime scene, surrounded by onlookers who are far too familiar with the sound of sirens. Last night shortly after 7pm several persons witnessed 19-year-old Kareem Barona escape the hands of death as a lone gunman who approached a few feet away out of Pitts Alley. Barona and two of his friends were socializing in front of the yard when the gunman approached and fired a barrage of bullets in their direction injuring Barona. Deidra Avila, Barona’s girlfriend said she had just spoken to him a few minutes before the shooting and just walked around the lane to their home located in Cadle’s Alley.

Deidra Avila, Girlfriend of Shooting Victim: “Before the shooting me and my friend went to the shop so I told her I would want chicken. So when we looked I hollered “Hey isn’t that KJ ?” so she hollered “Yes girl.” so I hollered “You KJ come here.” and he came and said “What do you want ?” So I said “I just want a chicken.” so he said “Right now I will bring it for you.” So we were there talking and his friend was waiting for him at the lane. When I went upstairs I heard shots I hollered “Hey Tanya aren’t those gunshots ?” So I ran downstairs and I was running out here in the alley and when I was running they hollered “Deidra it’s KJ.” so  I was running there on New Road and when I reached there they were putting him in the truck and I just jumped in and they took him to the hospital and we just stayed there. We went in to see him and he was getting up, talking and everything and from there we went. Thank God he’s okay. Right now he is alright, in good condition but a bullet is still in him and he feels kind of weak so they put him on the drips.”

Avila says she has no knowledge of Barona belonging to any gang elements in the area and can’t think of any possible reason why someone would have wanted him dead.
