Belize City Woman Dies in Road Traffic Accident

A woman has lost her life in a road accident on Saturday evening in western Belize. Reporter Vejea Alvarez tells us more about what happened in the following report.

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: This was the scene where 40 year old Rhonda Burgess lost her life on Saturday evening just after six o’clock. The black overturned Chevy SUV seen here with blown out tires had flipped several times near mile 45 on the George Price Highway. The occupants who were inside with Burgess include her common law husband, her sister, her brother-in-law and her niece and nephew. They were on their way to Belmopan to attend a family reunion but never made it. It was a harrowing incident, one that 29 year old Eric Tillett, Burgess’ common law husband says he won’t soon forget.

Eric Tillett, Common-law husband

Eric Tillett, Common-law husband: “We left from Belize City 5[PM] stopped to Fabers road to purchase gas and we were going on our way and when we were going toward the Cotton Tree area my brother-in-law Earlyn Young he was driving – let me state that first and foremost it was not me I was in the back seat my brother-in-law Earlyn Young was the driver. He attempted to overtake a cane truck.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: And that’s when things took a turn for the worst. Tillett says he helplessly watch his soulmate die on the side of the road after being flung from the vehicle.

Eric Tillett, Common-law husband: “The driver of the cane truck that we were trying to overtake saw that we were trying to overtake and he didn’t give us the space, the way for us to overtake he just forced his way and allowed us to drive off the road and we went on the loose stones and gravel. Earlyn Young was trying to control the car because the car was swerving and losing control, he was trying and I just heard one of the back wheels burst and the car just started to flip, flip, flip, flip, flip, flip, flip. I closed my eyes and I started to pray “Please God help us, please let us-” and when the car stopped I saw one of the minors flew out of the car then I saw my common law wife Rhonda Burgess fly out of the car also. When the car decided to stop and it stopped on its back on a hill and I was the first one to come out of the car I was a little lost and when I was hollering for everybody and everybody answered me but my girl didn’t answer me at all, she was motionless down there dead on the spot.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: The couple had been together for the last five years and Tillett says that Burgess was the main reason he turned his life around and now he faces life without his best friend.

Eric Tillett, Common-law husband: “I was a normal street man and father God just sent her in my life and father God sent her to put me on a positive path and a positive road. She was my everything, my friend, my companion, Rhonda was one of the kindest persons I ever met in life. She was helpful to everybody. She didn’t have to know her and you come to her and beg her for a dollar or beg her for something to eat or something and she has it she will give it to you. She was one of the kindest persons out of everybody in that truck she of all persons.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: According to the Head of the National Crime Investigation Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvette the driver of the vehicle has been served with notice of intended prosecution.

ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch

Reporter: Will Santander face any sanction for the truck that was parked on the shoulder of the road ?

ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Well that is a part of the investigation at this point in time.”
