Belize Climbs to 25th in World Happiness Report, Ranking High on Freedom and Social Support

Belize now ranks number 25 out of 147 countries on the World Happiness Report for the year 2024. The World Happiness Report assesses national happiness using six key factors such as GDP per capita, social support, and healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. The last time Belize was included in this list was in 2017 when it was listed 50 out of 155 countries. Some notable highlights include that stable life evaluation score of 6.711 out of 10. Interestingly, this ranking has remained consistent over time, suggesting that despite economic and social fluctuations, the overall perception of happiness in Belize has been relatively stable. This stability indicates a balance between factors that enhance well-being and challenges that persist. One of the strongest contributors to happiness in Belize is freedom, ranking first globally with a 97.0% score, contributing 15.2% to overall life evaluation. This suggests that Belizeans feel a strong sense of personal liberty, which likely enhances their quality of life. Social support is another key factor, ranked 57th, with 86.9% of the population reporting they have someone to rely on, accounting for 22.9% of happiness levels. Despite a lower GDP per capita ($12,620, ranked 83), economic well-being still plays a role, contributing 18.7% to happiness. On the downside, Belize faces challenges in areas such as perceptions of corruption (81.3%, ranked 92) and generosity (21.1%, ranked 96th). Corruption, while not the biggest detractor, can undermine trust in institutions, while lower generosity may indicate weaker community engagement. Meanwhile, healthy life expectancy data is missing, but it is estimated to contribute 7.8% to overall happiness. Over time, life evaluation has remained between 6 and 7, showing resilience in public sentiment. The data on positive and negative emotions suggests a mix of emotional experiences, though specific trends are unclear. Benevolence metrics, including donation rates, volunteering, and helping strangers, have fluctuated, showing variable community participation. Inequality, measured by standard deviation, lacks full data, but its impact remains a crucial factor to monitor. In summary, Belize’s happiness is driven primarily by high freedom and strong social support, even though economic challenges and corruption concerns persist. The country’s stable ranking suggests a society where personal freedoms and community bonds outweigh economic constraints, making it an interesting case in global happiness studies. The country at the bottom of the list is Afghanistan with the number one country being Finland.
