Belize Coast Guard Invests in Education of Sailors and Officers

The Belize Coast Guard is investing in its human resources as several of its sailors and officers are overseas furthering their education.  Rear Admiral of the Belize Coast Guard, Elton Bennett, told Love News that this is a strategy that will secure a high standard of efficacy and performance as the years progress.

RADM Elton Bennett, BCG Commandant: “We currently have officers in different parts of the world. We have in South America, we currently have officers in Guyana at Guyana University working at post graduate level. We have officers in Mexico doing training in the medical field and at the academy as well. Now these are long term investments. For example the officers in Mexico will not be coming back into Belize util five years from now so the Coast Guard will be able to expand its medical capacity in house but at the same time will be able to do more for the country. And so we have a good mix of officers in Mexico but also in Taiwan. We currently have six officers in Taiwan. We have four officer cadets that are going through the naval academy in Taiwan. Again they will return over a period of time the first one is due back in Belize in two years time and then thereafter one year every year one officer will be returning. Lt. Commander Alma Pinelo is also in Taiwan she’s been there for almost a year and a half now doing senior staff training. She returns some time in August or September of this year. And also our Vice Commandant Cpt. Gregory Soberanis is there in Taiwan doing advanced studies in national development. So again all different levels in Taiwan where we’re seeking opportunities to expand our capacity and of course look after the needs of the organization well into the f

As for the positions that these officers abroad will hold once they return, the Rear Admiral explaned how the promotions work at the Belize Coast Guard.

RADM Elton Bennett, BCG Commandant: “Some of the courses are promotional courses. For example the academy once you’ve completed the academy you return back as a Commission Officer so you go at entry which in the cases of the officers there they will return as a Lt. Junior Grade so that’s pretty much a promotional course. The senior staff course that Alma Pinelo is on is a requirement for promotion so that is one of a few requirements so once she has ticked off all of those achievements then she will be promotable.”
