Belize Coast Guard mourns one of its own

The Belize Coast Guard has erected a black bow at their headquarters as they mourn the passing of one of their apprentices.  Seaman Apprentice Anthony Pop was ran over by an 18-wheeler truck on the Southern Highway near the Swasey Bridge on Monday night.

The Belize Coast Guard has erected a black bow at their headquarters as they mourn the passing of one of their apprentices.  Seaman Apprentice Anthony Pop was ran over by an 18-wheeler truck on the Southern Highway near the Swasey Bridge on Monday night.  In an interview with the Acting Commandant, Gregory Soberanis, we learnt that Pop was on his way home when he was killed.

Gregory Soberanis, Acting Commandant, Belize Coast Guard: The Belize Coast Guard is mourning the loss of one it’s member. Seaman Apprentice Pop joined the Coast Guard last year, he was a member of intake 10. Very vibrant, strong, young sailor, unfortunately he lost his life. He was hit by an 18-wheeler truck one of those trucks that transport banana down south. The Coast Guard made contact with his family and we’re currently working with the police department and helping the family to cope with the loss and we will definitely provide all necessary support in seeing that our young sailor, member of the Coast Guard family, be laid to rest with the honor and dignity that he deserves.”

Apprentice Pop was twenty years old and had suffered major injuries to his face and body.  For the men and women at the Belize Coast Guard, Acting Commandant Soberanis said it is a great loss.

Gregory Soberanis, Acting Commandant, Belize Coast Guard: As a Seaman Apprentice one of his main roles and duties was to conduct patrols out at sea. He was a diligent sailor, he was always willing to work. As I mentioned he got along very well with his colleagues and so it really had a ripple effect among the men and women in the Coast Guard when they got the news that he had passed away. But he was well loved by members of the Coast Guard and many of our members have expressed sadness over his loss. I spoke with the ComPol today the police are doing their part so I’m thankful to the Commissioner of Police they have been on the case and they are going to keep us abreast with the investigation and I’m sure they’re going to keep in touch with the family as well so I want to extend my gratitude to the police department for their assistance in this matter.”

The driver of the 18-wheeler was 56-year-old Pedro Ico who was transporting bananas.  Yesterday our newsroom heard an account from an eyewitness who claimed that he was at the scene and that he and another passerby had to run down the truck driver to stop.  We have since heard from the driver’s family members who are disputing the report that Ico had to be run down to stop at the accident scene.  Love News understands that the truck has since been impounded by Police and Ico has been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
