Corona Reef is a protected area in Belize that spans into Guatemala’s waters. It is a very crucial area in the Gulf of Honduras with four miles of the reef in Belize and five miles in Guatemala. It is a trafficked area due to shipping and recreational activities, and has a very rich marine life. It is due to all these factors that the Belize Coast Guard has taken a special interest in guarding the reef. In an interview with Rear Admiral Elton Bennett, he explained what makes guarding this area, a sensitive assignment.
As the news of the wealth of the Corona Reef circulates, more and more people are accessing the area. This, according to Bennett, has led them to increase their patrols in the area. He added that the Belize Coast Guard works closely in this area with TIDE and the Fisheries Department.
In tomorrow’s newscast, we’ll tell you of the relationship between the Belize Coast Guard and the Guatemalan Navy when it comes to the Corona Reef.
