Belize Congratulates Mexico’s First Female President-Elect, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum

Another celebration that Belize will be joining in is the imminent inauguration of Mexico’s President-elect, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum.  The former Mayor is the first woman leader to be elected to head Mexico.  Minister Fonseca also weighed in on this victory and what it means for Belize’s development and regional relations.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “You know she represents the same party of the president, President Amlo. We have enjoyed a very, very good relationship with President Amlo, particularly Prime Minister Briceno has a very strong personal relationship with him. Prime Minister has already spoken to the new president-elect. He spoke to her the night of the election, her election victory. So we look forward again. There are tremendous opportunities for Belize in terms of our relationship with Mexico. It’s a country of a hundred and thirty plus million people. Again, tourism, investment, trade, agriculture. These are critically important areas for Belize’s growth and development. And so Mexico represents a large market for us. And so it’s absolutely in our interest to strengthen and grow and expand our relationship with Mexico. And we see that happening with the new president-elect.”
