Belize Defence Force and Coast Guard Host Women, Peace, and Security Symposium

The Belize Defence Force (BDF), along with the Belize Coast Guard (BCG) launched their annual Women, Peace, and Security symposium. The event took place today at the Price Barracks in Ladyville where several men and women participated in interactive discussions and panel sessions. Special Guest at the opening ceremony was the Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam who addressed the gathering. The symposium, held under the theme, “Inspire Inclusion”, highlighted the vital role of women in promoting peace and security. Cynthia Williams, Human Development Coordinator at the Women’s Department spoke to Love News about the importance of the symposium.

Currently, the ratio of men to women in the Belize Defence Force is ten to one.  It is a situation that Brigadier General Azariel Loria says they are working at addressing, as women are also welcome to join the force.

Lieutenant Commander of the Belize Coast Guard (BCG) Alma Pinelo, who is recognized as the First Female Acting Vice Commandant in the BCG, encourages the participation of men in events that celebrate women during Women’s Month.

Love News understands that twelve percent of the Belize Coast Guard comprise women, equivalent to 60.
