“Belize Defence Force Discovers Apparent Guatemalan Military Base in Adjacency Zone

The Belize Defence Force has unearthed an apparent military base in the Adjacency Zone being built by the Guatemalan military. The discovery was made by troops on patrol who found two structures being built. The base is being built in the Santa Cruz, Guatemala area, directly opposite the BDF base in Jalacte, Toledo District.  Minister of National Security and Border Defense, Florencio Marin Jr., spoke on the matter today, saying they are in communication with the Organization of American States (OAS) to determine whether or not the base is encroaching on our territory.

Florencio Marin Jr, Minister of National Defence and Border Security: “Our BDF patrol saw it. We’re in the process of verifying it and once we have verification then we will take the appropriate action. We can’t behave premature, we need verification from the OAS. Once that occurs then we will do what is the right thing.”

Love News understands that the issue has more to do with the Guatemalans going against the Confidence Building Measures that prevents either side from putting up any new structures within the Adjacency Zone.  We understand that construction had begun about one month ago.
