A high-level delegation from Belize met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this morning in Kyiv, Ukraine. The group, which left the country on Wednesday, is led by President of the Senate Carolyn Trench Sandiford, and comprises of Senators Isabel Bennett, Collet Montejo, and Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Belize, Rolando Montero. We understand that the discussions focused on strengthening diplomatic ties between Belize and Ukraine and exploring potential areas for collaboration between the two nations. President Sandiford addressed the group of Ukrainian officials earlier today and underscored Belize’s support for the currently war-torn country.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca weighed in on the delegation’s trip and stated that the visit underscores Belize’s commitment to fostering international relations and enhancing cooperation with European countries.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “You know, we are in touch with our counterparts in Ukraine. As you all know, very recently the special envoy, Mrs. Briceño, was there for a visit. So we’re satisfied that they’re going to be safe. You know, they’re there along with other people, other delegations from different parts of the world. They’re there to, you know, find out what is happening, to see for themselves and to express our solidarity with the people of Ukraine.”
In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine and since then has continued to bomb and send troops into the country. The invasion, the largest and deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II, has caused hundreds of thousands of military casualties and tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilian casualties.
