The Belize City branch of the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) had its annual general meeting today. According to BNTU President Elena Smith, the union leaders are updating the teachers about the issues that have been at the forefront of their mandate.
Elena Smith President BNTU: “What we do at these meetings we give updates and so as President I would give our teachers an update about what has been happening with the Union and about the Union. Of course you will hear that they will ask questions on these things because it’s part of the media and so we respond and we inform them of what is going on in regards to hardship and proposal 22. So what we have done today, we have made it clear to our members that our issue right now is the fact that the Ministry had promised to meet with us to discuss these matters and we have sent them about three emails to ask them for a date and we kept reminding them of a date. That wasn’t given to us except to say that our district person can meet with our District Managers. Our Union has never had these type of meetings with employees or low level employees or middle management of this Ministry, we have always met with the officials of the Ministry and so what we are saying is that, that is disrespect because the Ministry knows fully well that when the BNTU meets on these matters we meet with these officials of the Ministry, not district managers. So that’s we are briefing our members on and we are dealing with them in the matter of Proposal 22 that we hear the Minister speak about and we you know are able to share the documents that we have to show that what we are saying is what has been happening.”
The next annual general meeting for the Belize City branch of the BNTU is early next year. Next week Wednesday the national branch is holding a protest in the Capital.
