The Belize Electricity Limited is currently on alert after one of their energy suppliers, BAPCOL, has paused their services, and the line that connects to the Mexico grid is in need of dire repairs. In essence, the only stable energy source for the country is from Fortis. In a release issued on Tuesday, BEL noted that the company is currently, ‘stepping up contingency measures to mitigate possible disruptions in the supply of electricity to our Customers that could occur during the remainder of this month.’ It is a situation that BEL has not faced before, but according to Jose Moreno, the General Manger for Distribution Services, there is no need for major concerns.
Moreno explained that currently, they are keeping their eyes on the line that connects to the Mexican power source. He noted that the line is vulnerable due to some damages, but they are forced to put off the repairs due to the current availability of power sources.
The current situation, according to Moreno, is in no way a reflection of BEL not being prepared. He further stated that the weather has been unstable with severe heat, and lightning storms.
In tomorrow’s newscast, we’ll talk about the cost of electricity, and how you can lower your light bill.
