The Belize National Forensic Science Service (NFSS) is enhancing the nation’s forensic capabilities and bolstering its crime-fighting efforts. This week, the NFSS installed a state-of-the-art Applied Biosystems Rapid HIT ID instrument in its newly established Rapid DNA Section. The advanced technology is set to revolutionize the country’s approach to criminal investigations by enabling in-country Rapid DNA testing for crime scene samples, human remains, and disaster victim identification. The NFSS says the investment, funded by taxpayers’ dollars, reflects a clear dedication to improving the speed and effectiveness of forensic investigations. Rapid DNA technology, which has been transforming crime-solving efforts globally, can generate DNA profiles in as little as 90 minutes. This quick turnaround time allows for faster identification of suspects, potentially preventing further crimes and linking individuals to past offenses. It will also aid in connecting crime scenes and resolving cold cases, providing a powerful tool for law enforcement. According to the NFSS, by streamlining the DNA identification process, the Rapid HIT ID system frees up forensic resources to focus on more complex cases, such as processing sexual assault evidence kits and conducting detailed investigations at crime scenes. The service is set to become fully operational over the next three months and is expected to reduce case backlogs and increase the efficiency of laboratory operations.
