Belize Government Ordered to Pay Nearly $10 Million in Land Dispute

Yesterday we told you about the Caribbean Court of Justice ruling that saw the government of Belize lose millions of dollars in a land dispute against Belize City resident Primrose Gabourel. The government had compulsorily acquired Gabourel’s parcel of land located in the Buttonwood Bay area of Belize City. The issue of compensation for the land had gone to the High Court and Court of Appeal which the government lost at each level. The final appellate Delivering the judgment was Justice Denys Barrow who apart from awarding Gabourel over four and a half million in compensation, also ordered that government repay her three hundred thousand dollars for the landfill as well as six percent interest per annum since the acquisition in 2007. The final figure sits at just under ten million dollars. Hector Guerra represented Gabourel in the case while Samantha Matute represented the appellants, the Attorney General, and the Minister of Natural Resources.
