Belize Government to Build Two New State-of-the-Art Football Fields to Promote Youth Sports and Healthy Living

The Government of Belize has committed to constructing two additional state-of-the-art football fields in the south side of Belize City. At the inauguration ceremony of the Berger Field, Prime Minister Briceno explained that there is a need for more recreation facilities to promote sports and exercise among youth. Minister of Health, Kevin Bernard, says the announcement will also promote healthy living among youth. He explained that promoting physical activity among the country’s youth will aid in decreasing the significant number of persons that develop Non-communicable diseases.

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health and Wellness: “As you know, Belize is prevailing for obesity, diabetes, hypertension and so we want to encourage our young people, especially our children, during the summer time apart from sitting down and reading and putting more knowledge, keep healthy, eat healthy, but exercise. So the Berger Field inauguration, I must commend the Minister. I remember when we signed that MOU, when I was the Minister of Sports at the time along with the Minister of Tourism and it has come to fruition. So I’m really happy that has been able to be finalized. Similarly, I’m doing in my own constituency with the support of sports through the Mundialito and I think many other persons are doing the same. We want to encourage our people, our young people, to be active, to be engaged in the different summer camps that we had. I know the Prime Minister in his own area is doing a summer camp program where there is sporting activity disciplines that they are engaged in. And so if we are to fight non communicable diseases in this country we must live healthy, we must eat healthy, and we must take the necessary exercise on a daily basis. And being part of sports allows us to one, to build our minds strong and at the same time remain active and physically active in what we do so that we could prepare for the next day and so forth. But as the Minister of Health, I want to also encourage all of our persons if there is any need for you to seek any support, reach out to any of us at the ministry, reach out to any facility, but let us live a healthy life. Let us ensure that Belize have a healthy population.”
