The Government of Belize has issued a warning to those in possession of Belizean nationality through the Economic Citizenship Program (ECP). Leader for Government Business in the Senate, Eamon Courtenay, spoke on the abolishment of the Bill, as well as amendments made to the ECP. The amendments are targeting those who have never visited Belize but have somehow gained Belizean nationality through the ECP and keep renewing their citizenship. According to Courtenay, there will be no renewals for those who have never landed in Belize.
Senator Courtenay also noted that aside from the ECP being an abuse of Belizean citizenship, he noted that with Belize exploring visa waivers with other countries, this move on the Economic Citizenship Program is crucial.
The Economic Citizenship Bill is one of several brought over from the House of Representatives.
