Sumeet Betancourt, Deputy Chief Climate Change Officer of Belize’s National Climate Change Office, is currently participating in a World Bank-KPOK Knowledge Exchange on Blue Carbon, which concludes tomorrow in Seoul and Jeju, Republic of Korea. This 5-day international forum has gathered leading global experts and representatives from various nations to delve into critical aspects of blue carbon ecosystems, carbon markets, and collaborative climate action. The exchange aims to foster knowledge sharing and build capacity in harnessing the potential of blue carbon for climate change mitigation. Betancourt is actively contributing to the technical sessions, sharing Belize’s experiences and lessons learned in developing carbon market readiness. He is also highlighting Belize’s ongoing efforts in conserving and restoring its vital blue carbon ecosystems, which include mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes. A release from the government indicates that Belize’s participation in this exchange underscores the nation’s commitment to addressing climate change through innovative and sustainable solutions. As stated by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Solid Waste Management, both blue and green carbon are considered essential components of Belize’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It also noted that opportunities like this are crucial for keeping Belize at the cutting edge of climate solutions, and that by engaging with global experts and sharing our experiences, we are reinforcing our nationally driven, sustainable path forward and strengthening our ability to leverage blue carbon for climate action. It is anticipated that the knowledge gained from this exchange will further enhance Belize’s capacity to develop and implement effective blue carbon strategies, contributing to both national climate goals and global efforts to combat climate change.
