Belize Joins Global Efforts for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

On July 30, Belize will join countries around the world for the celebration of World Day against Trafficking in Persons. The day is geared towards spreading awareness about the issues surrounding human trafficking. Nationally, government agencies and NGOs such as the RET International Belize have been hosting awareness activities such as “Wear Blue Fridays” in support of trafficking victims. There is also a walkathon, being hosted in collaboration with the Benque Viejo Town Council planned for July 29. Today, Love News spoke with Minister of Human Development Dolores Balderamos Garcia, about the role of her Ministry in the national response to human trafficking. Here’s what she had to say.

Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development: “We have counseling services at the community rehab department and we also have services of reaching out. In other words, if you need assistance from the women and family support department on Albert Street you can approach them. But the counseling services that the ministry offers is in our other department of community rehab and that is located at the hub. You know where the hub is? So, and of course, if you know if we are approached if we are approached we can try to assist. But of course, there can’t be a proper burial now because of the huge mix-up that occurred. But we do offer burial assistance for those who have a particular need, mainly our poorest people.”

The 2023 theme for World Day against Trafficking in Persons is “Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind.” The theme is inspired by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals.
