Belize Judiciary Undergoes Training on New Sentencing Guidelines

Around thirty judicial officers including magistrates, senior magistrates, and high court judges are gathering in Belize City this week for a special training seminar. The training, which is being facilitated by the Judicial Education Institute (JEI) is focused on the new sentencing guidelines released earlier this year as well as judgment writing. Participants will be a part of in-depth discussions, and receive practical guidance on sentencing, evidence, and critical aspects of judicial decision-making and legal reasoning. High Court Justice Antionette Moore says that handing down a fair sentence is important as it will have some impact on the case once it’s appealed.

Moore added that the seminar emphasizes the commitment of Chief Justice Louise Esther Blenman to the continued professional training for judicial officers. The seminar will run until March 21.
