Belize marks Breastfeeding Week

Activities marking World Breastfeeding Week kicked off on Monday in Belize. The Ministry of Health and Wellness says that the commemoration of this week is a general call to strengthen the capacity to promote, protect and support nursing mothers all over the world. Nutritionist at the Ministry, Robyn Daly told Love News that part of the shared responsibility is to create supportive communities and safe spaces for mothers to care for their babies.

Breastmilk provides all the nutrients needed for a baby’s proper growth and development and strengthens the immune response, preventing babies from getting sick. Additionally, breastfeeding protects mothers from cancer, reduces the risk of postpartum depression, and promotes the loss of extra baby weight gained during pregnancy.
