Belize Mourns Passing of Prominent Ambassador, David Allan Kirkwood Gibson

David Gibson, a native of Belmopan, was a prominent figure back in the 1990s when he served Belize in the area of foreign affairs.  Tonight, hundreds are lamenting the passing of a great past ambassador.  David Allan Kirkwood Gibson, the career public servant passed away peacefully in his sleep on Easter Monday.  He served the country in numerous capacities, including a significant post in foreign affairs between 1993 and 2003. Gibson held a master’s degree in public policy and Economic Planning from the International Institute of Social Studies in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and was instrumental in the negotiations addressing the Guatemalan claim on Belize. Gibson was a well-respected and well-known patriot, who served as a role model to many, including former Ambassador and Belize’s current Cabinet Secretary, Stuart Leslie. This evening, Leslie spoke about the tremendous loss and the legacy Gibson leaves behind.

Stuart Leslie, Cabinet Secretary: “Ambassador Gibson was one of the finest diplomats Belize ever had. He was a mentor to me and I’m sure a mentor to many foreign service officers who pass through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during his time. He also served as a permanent secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources where he was as well an outstanding. Belize has lost a great diplomat and a truly outstanding Belizean. I have many great encounters with Mr.Gibson when we traveled together during talks with Guatemala and at the United Nations and so on and one thing about him is he was never a man to get angry and he always enjoyed a nice steak. And so we had many a great discussions over a fine piece of meat about diplomacy and about world affairs. We have lost a truly exceptional diplomat.”

Ambassador Gibson also founded the respected Think Tank Centre for Strategic Studies Policy Analysis and Research (CSSPAR) in 1995 and served as its Coordinator up until his passing./
