Today, the Belize Nature Conservation Foundation (BNCF) distributed a hundred thousand dollars in grants to non-governmental organizations that co-manage protected areas. Two fifty-thousand-dollar grants were issued to the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation Development (SACD). The award ceremony was held at the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Campus and highlighted the vital role these organizations play in preserving Belize’s biodiversity. Speaking at the award ceremony, Leonardo Chavarria, Chairman of the BNCF, said that the foundation has issued almost two million dollars in grants since 2001.
Eli Miller, Managing Director of Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, and Samuel Barrett, Development Manager of SACD, spoke on the importance of their projects.
The BNCF operates under the Tropical Forest Conservation Agreement, a debt-for-nature swap between Belize and the United States, brokered by The Nature Conservancy.
