Today is International Day of Education, a United Nations event that highlights the importance of education for development. This year’s theme, “AI and Education: Human Agency in an Automated World,” and is centered on how artificial intelligence can be used to support the education and development of students. Minister of State in the Ministry of Education Dr. Louis Zabaneh said that the day highlights the work the ministry has been doing in making technology and internet accessible in remote areas through the U Spaces initiative. Zabaneh says that apart from making tools such as AI available to students, the ministry is also teaching values to ensure the ethical use of AI.
Dr. Zabaneh notes that the ethical use of AI is an issue that countries across the world are currently grappling with.
The ministry’s U-Space initiative equips facilities with computers that give students access to the internet but also rolls out programs to teach students various skills. The Ministry has opened U Spaces in the Corozal, Orange Walk, Stann Creek, and Toledo districts, with plans underway to roll out others in the Cayo and Belize districts.
