Belize is plagued with violence, as every few days another murder is reported. This is why it is important to observe today as the International Day of Non-Violence. This day was established by the General Assembly in 2007 as an occasion to disseminate the message of non-violence through education and public awareness. The Secretary General of the General Assembly, António Guterres, gave a brief message to commemorate the day.
October 2 was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. This year’s theme is “Say No to Violence.”
