The clock is ticking with just 13 days left until the general elections, but efforts are still being made to try and prevent it. The Belize PEACE Movement is not backing down from trying to stay the elections until after the government conducts a redistricting exercise. The latest attempt in the Court of Appeal is expected to be heard next Monday, March 3, leaving just nine days to go. Attorney General Anthony Sylvestre, addressed the appeal today, saying that Monday’s session will be for the case management. Sylvestre says that he is unsure if the matter can be properly heard in light of the time constraints, but he is sure that the court will do its best to expedite the matter.
The PEACE Movement is arguing that if the elections go through as planned, the results will be illegal and unconstitutional because electoral divisions are not proportionate. The High Court recently dismissed another effort to stay the elections which was brought by Jeremy Enriquez and two other claimants Jessica Tulcey and Rudolph Norales./
