Video surveillance footage is a go-to piece of evidence for the Belize Police Department when it comes to investigating crimes. Despite having cameras all over Belize City, the department has had instances where they could not receive footage because the cameras in certain areas were down. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says the department is addressing the issue by upgrading the camera network.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “We are in the process of migrating all the point to point cameras which are wireless to fiber. We find that the point to point whenever we have a strong breeze it shifts the antenna and the camera goes down so many a times we have many of the cameras down. We don’t want that to occur so we are migrating all of the cameras to fiber through BTL and we’re hoping that that will be done by the middle of January. I can say that majority of them are already on fiber and while we might have one and two cameras down the majority of our cameras are up. I am also pleased to to say that we have recently installed a number of cameras in the SET Site area behind Martins and those cameras are also up and running that’s the area that was giving us a bit of problem the other day, we have no installed cameras in that area.”
Earlier this year police, through assistance from the Government of Belize placed a set of cameras on the John Smith Link Road, to combat the repeated occurrences of criminals hiding dead bodies in the area.
