Belize Political Landscape Shifts: Councilor Kaya Cattouse Joins PUP Candidacy, San Pedro Mayor Faces Party Challenge

Tonight, there are new developments in the political landscape. In Belize City, Councilor Kaya Cattouse has announced her candidacy to run under the PUP banner in the Albert constituency. Cattouse made her announcement on Facebook and stated, quote, “I’m honored to announce my candidacy to be your Representative. Over the past four years, I’ve witnessed the challenges facing the Albert Constituency, and I’m more determined than ever to lead us back to our blue roots. Together, we can ensure a PUP victory and pave the way for a better quality of life for all Albert residents by uniting under the PUP banner and ensuring that no one is left behind!” While it is yet to be seen whether Cattouse will be challenged by anyone in her own party, if selected she will be facing off against Tracy Taegar Panton, the current UDP Area Representative. Additionally, today, San Pedro Mayor Gualberto Nunez received news that he won’t be able to contest the current PUP Area Representative in Belize Rural South. According to reports, the PUP’s National Executive has decided to bar all recently elected mayors from participating in any standard bearer conventions. The party reportedly informed Nunez that he would only be able to participate in an internal endorsement convention. Whether Nunez will accept the party’s decision or attempt to fight it.
