Belize has recorded fifty murders for the first six months of 2020. The first murder for the year was a 16-year-old, Samantha Conorquie. Following her murder, three other young children lost their lives to violence. Less than ten days after Conorquie’s murder, 3-year-old Mark Tuyul Jr was killed by his step-father in Belize City. Later, in March, 4-year-old Kia Herbert and 5-year-old Dominique Rhamdas were victims of gun violence, also in Belize City. Up until that point, Belize had seen 36 of the fifty murders. The numbers slowed after a State of Emergency was declared on southside Belize City, and then over the entire country. Over first six months, seven of the murder victims were females, while 43 of them were males. 36 of them were due to gun violence, one was bludgeoned, and the rest were either stabbed or chopped. There were three double murders: one in San Ignacio, Cayo District in February; one in Belize City in March; and another in Hopkins, Stann Creek District. The youngest murder victim, as previously mentioned, was 3-years-old, while the oldest was 79-year-old James Slump who was killed in Hopkins. The fiftieth murder, which occurred on June 28, was 52-year-old Isais Oroman, who was shot and left for dead on the Bullet Tree Road in the Cayo District.
