Belize Records Modest Growth in Niche Agricultural Exports to Asia

Belize is gaining encouraging signals on two economic fronts tonight, modest but steady growth in niche agricultural exports to Asia and renewed international attention as a competitive retirement destination in the Caribbean. New international trade data shows Belize continuing its gradual push into non-traditional export markets, particularly in specialty agricultural products.  According to the latest figures from the United Nations COMTRADE database, Belize exported approximately 24 thousand Belize dollars’ worth of live trees, plants, bulbs, roots and cut flowers to Hong Kong in 2024. While the figure remains relatively small, it represents a clear increase from two thousand Belize dollars recorded in 2003, pointing to slow but measurable progress in entering the competitive Asian market.  Government officials have consistently identified high-value, niche agricultural exports as part of Belize’s long-term diversification strategy. Within policy circles, the upward trend is being viewed as an encouraging sign for small producers seeking access to premium overseas markets.  However, trade analysts note that the sector remains in its early stages. Export volumes are still modest in absolute terms, and sustained growth will depend on scaling production, maintaining strict phytosanitary standards, and strengthening logistics and market linkages.  The data also comes against the backdrop of Belize’s ongoing trade deficit, where imports continue to significantly outpace exports. Policymakers say targeted expansion into specialty horticulture forms part of a broader effort to gradually improve foreign exchange earnings and reduce reliance on traditional commodities such as sugar and citrus.  Officials indicate the next phase will focus on supporting growers to expand output and meet international quality requirements as Belize works to deepen its presence in niche global markets.
