Belize Selected for Five Year Grant to Tackle Poverty

Belize has been selected for a five-year grant to fund local programs aimed at tackling poverty. A release from the Embassy of the United States in Belmopan says that at the same time, the U.S.-Government funded Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant will also create programs to stimulate economic growth. The country will develop and lead the design and implementation of the projects, based on economic priorities that the country identifies. The MCC is an independent U.S. agency that works to reduce global poverty through fiscal development. It has invested hundreds of millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars annually to help partner nations, like Belize, to grow economically while promoting local ownership and long-term sustainability. The release notes that the MCC provides assistance to democracies that meet rigourous standards for good governance, fighting corruption and respecting human rights. Belize’s strong performance on the MCC scorecard, including the meeting the Control Corruption and Democratic Rights indictors, led to the corporation’s decision to include Belize in the funding.
