While chaos brews inside the UDP, there are still national issues that need attending to. One of those is the pending visit by the Guatemalan President, Alejandro Giammattei. Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred Elrington updated the media on the visit that the President had announced days after taking over the presidency in Guatemala.
Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “I met with the Guatemalan Ambassador only last night. He was at a Japanese cocktail Japanese had in celebration of Japanese Day and I spoke to him and we raised the issue of the impending visit of the President and he told me that it was still on. It’s really a matter for them they have got to find time and they have a difficult agenda because they have a lot of issues, very serious issues and Belize is not really a priority matter for them but he told me that the visit was very much on.”
Giammattei was inaugurated as president in January and has since stated that he wants to renew ties with Belize in areas of tourism and trade.
