Belize Sugar Industries Limited Closes the Sugar Season Crop

The four cane farmer associations and Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI) met on Tuesday to discuss the closing of the 2020/21 sugar crop. The Tower Hill sugar factory has milled to date more than 1.175 million metric tons of sugar cane and produced close to one hundred twenty thousand metric tons of sugar. This is a marked improvement from the 2020 crop, which was impacted, adversely, by severe drought. Despite a late start to the crop, due to inclement weather and the poor state of the sugar roads, farmers and the mill have worked tirelessly to bring in the cane and complete a successful crop. A release from BSI says that farmers and miller agreed to conclude the crop on July twenty-seven on condition that adequate cane supply and quality is maintained to that date. BSI has issued a notice to farmers with cane remaining to bring the cane in by that date, and to contact the mill if they have difficulties or require assistance. Once grinding completes, the mill will undergo extensive repairs having suffered the impact of low quality cane in recent weeks due to the weather and late crop end.
