The People’s United Party and other entities across the country are preparing to observe National Service Day tomorrow. The day is a solemn observance dedicated to honoring the legacy of the nation’s founding father, the Right Honourable George Price. Tomorrow will mark the 14th anniversary of his passing. The initiative to establish National Service Day came about shortly after Price’s death, with the government officially declaring September 19th as a day for all Belizeans to engage in acts of public service. While it is not a public holiday, it is a day of action and reflection. Prime Minister John Briceno explained that the day calls for service to one another as was the mantra that the late Price lived by.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “You now that Mr.Price gave his life to this country and he always felt that we must always give back to Belize and how best can we celebrate the day that he left us if you want to put it that way by doing what he did best to serve his country, to serve the people and so as a party and as a country we ask everybody to do one small kind gesture to the neighbor or the neighborhood in order to help Belize better and that’s the whole idea behind service day which we celebrate on the date of his death.”
In Belize City, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Price’s gravesite at the Lord Ridge Cemetery. The remainder of the day will be marked by widespread community projects, such as clean-up campaigns, beautification efforts, and volunteer work
