The Belize Women Against Violence Movement (WAV) has elected a new president. Over the weekend, the members chose Doctor Pricilla Brown Lopez as their president.  Akira Genus Hewlett was chosen as Treasurer and Senieda Shol as secretary. The Belize WAV is an NGO that started the national public discussion about the ills of domestic violence. They took action by being involved in the drafting of the Domestic Violence Act model legislation and campaigned countrywide for its tabling and passing in the House of Representatives. The Act came into law in 1992. Presently, Belize WAV is meeting with the members of the National Assembly and discussing the need for a Sexual Offences Act. During the meeting this weekend as well, the members discussed the current situation of violence against women in Belize and the programs and resources needed to effectively address the issue. Belize WAV continues to collaborate with various organizations in the elimination of violence against women and children. As per the norm, they will be participating in the upcoming 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Their plans are to develop a national Action Plan to be followed with a strategic plan that will map out the way forward.
