Belize Zoo Mourns Loss of Jaguar Ambassador, Sylvia

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is mourning the loss of one of its feline ambassadors, Sylvia the Jaguar. Roxana Lemus, Lead Keeper at The Belize Zoo told Love News that Sylvia had been a part of the Zoo since 2017 after residents in Orange Walk captured her because she was eating dogs in their neighborhood. When Zoo staff evaluated Sylvia, they found that she was older and smaller than a lot of the jaguars in the zoo and suffering from health and dental issues including a missing K-9 tooth. Lemus explained that the zoo had to make the difficult decision to euthanize her over the weekend due to her failing health.

Lemus added that her loss was difficult for the zoo staff, because of the hour’s accumulated working with her over the years.

We note that Sylvia’s loss is also a loss for Belize. Jaguars are listed as “Near Threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, as they are facing population declines.
