
Belizean Answered the Cries of Elderly Couple

Last week we brought you the story of 69-year-old Lorna Nixon and her common-law-husband 63-year-old Ivan Swazo. The Belize City couple is poor and had cried out for help. And their cries were heard by thousands in the country because since the story aired on Love FM and Love TV, the couple received an overwhelming amount of assistance including the latest monetary donation from a San Pedro Resident. This morning we stopped by the couple and we found an excited Nixon. Hipolito Novelo reports.
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: Tonight, 69-year-old Lorna Nixon is no longer crying. She’s happy.
Lorna Nixon, Belize City Resident: “I am so so glad because the other day I was so sad and my heart is so full in waters but now I’m happy right now and I’m good to go.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: Last week, Nixon and her long time common-law-husband Ivan Swazo reached out to the public through Love News for help. They live in poverty along the coastline of Belize City in the Ceasar Ridge Road area. Since the story aired on Friday, thousands of Belizeans here and abroad understood the couple’s plight and since then the support has been overwhelming.
Lorna Nixon, Belize City Resident: “It’s a lot of people coming. It’s a lot. It’s a lot. I’m getting chairs, I’m getting this, I’m getting that, all kind of things as well, food, water I got everything I need.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: I see you have on a pretty blouse now.
Lorna Nixon, Belize City Resident: “I got a pretty blouse now too and pretty pants and everything so I’m good to go now.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: What kind of food did you get ?
Lorna Nixon, Belize City Resident: “I got groceries. I got rice, beans, flour, everything I need and they brought money and everything.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: So today what will you eat today ? Or yesterday what did you eat yesterday ?
Lorna Nixon, Belize City Resident: “I ate dinner and today I’m going to eat dinner again and I’m so glad for this so I said God be with me and I thank the all of you for coming out for me.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: The couple still lives in the small-one room house that continues to leak but for now, they are thanking everyone who has helped.
Lorna Nixon, Belize City Resident: “I think the whole of Belize because everybody came out to help me and came and brought this and that for me and gave me good things, nice things and I’m so happy and I won’t be crying again because I’m so happy and so glad for everything. So so good.”
