Belizean Centenarian Recognized in US on 103rd Birthday

A woman who was born in Mullins River in the Stann Creek District migrated to the United States in 1963 and was recently recognized as a centenarian in the United States.  An article highlighting the woman’s life was published online at  Rhoda Isabella Cherrington will be celebrating her hundred and third birthday on Wednesday, September 23.  She is the last of fourteen children and describes her secret to longevity as leading a simple life, working hard and living by the Grace of God.   Cherrington worked in the United States as a home health aide in New York and in West Palm Beach, Florida for over two decades.  During her time there she helped her relatives in Belize and facilitated them in migrating to the US in the 1970s.  Her work also entailed the caring of her grandchildren and other children up to the time she retired at age 91.  Cherrington currently resides in Ferrell in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York and has seven grandchildren, fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.  Her family members describe her as being sharp with a vivid memory of her years gone by.  It is to be noted that upon her 100th birthday in 2012, a legislative resolution was presented during a sitting of the New York Senate.  That resolution, reads, in part, quote, “WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the increasingly active roles they play in today’s society; their past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Rhoda Isabella Cherrington upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th Birthday on Saturday, September 22, 2012”  End of quote.  It went on to read, “RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate Rhoda Isabella Cherrington upon the occasion of her 100th Birthday; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Rhoda Isabella Cherrington.”  End of quote.  Cherrington was born to Robert Smith and Constance Robateau.
