Belizean Cyclist Derrick Chavarria to Compete in UCI Under 23 Cycling World Championship
Cyclist Derrick Chavarria has earned a spot in the Union Cyclist Internationale (UCI) Under 23 Cycling World Championship Road being held in Glasgow, Scotland on August 12. Chavarria, who is studying on a scholarship from the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) is the second Belizean to participate in this event. We spoke to Allan Auil, General Secretary for the Cycling Federation of Belize, who stressed that Chavarria’s participation in the race proves he has immense talent.
Chavarria said that the federation is also working on getting two other riders, Oscar Quiroz and Cory Williams to ride in Scotland, but that both men are over 23 and will have to enter the time trials. He stressed that the riders enter these events as ambassadors for Belize as well as athletes.
The UCI World Championships is an 11-day event that will see over 200 riders competing in thirteen divisions. The Under 23 race will begin at 4:30 a.m. on August 12, due to the time difference. Chavarria is scheduled to arrive in Scotland on August 8.
