Belizean Parliamentarians Attend FOPREL Meeting on Climate and Environmental Migration
Members of Belize’s parliament were in Costa Rica this week for a meeting of the forum of presiding officers of national parliaments of Central America and the Caribbean (FOPREL). Marconi Leal Member for Belize Rural North and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives attended the joint meeting of the Commission for Social Cohesion and the Fight against Poverty and of the Commission for the Environment and Climate Change of FOPREL, along with Member for Cayo West Jorge Espat. The meeting was focused on promoting inter-parliamentary dialogue on the importance of sharing best practices in transformation processes linked to Climate and Environmental Migration to the agrifood systems. Parliamentarians at the event also had the opportunity to identify legislative actions and opportunities to address the challenges affecting Climate and Environmental Migration and agrifood systems, as well as presented and discussed the “Action Plan” on Climate and Environmental Migration which is to be implemented in coordination with IOM, for approval and endorsement. They also passed and ratified a resolution to take a human rights approach when addressing these issues.
