Belizean Teen Receives Successful Pacemaker Implant in Life-Saving Surgery

A young girl of Santa Elena Town, Cayo District is the most recent patient to have had a successful pacemaker implant in Belize. Shermie Rodriguez, who will turn 15 years old on Sunday, was released from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital yesterday, following a 2-hour surgery conducted by heart surgeon, Dr Adrian Coye. Love News understands that the young girl had begun experiencing heart complications since she was five years old. She was eventually diagnosed with congenital heart block. According to the father, Elmer Rodriguez, they were hoping that the child would have outgrown the condition as she matured, but that was not the case.

With Shermie Rodriguez getting a second lease on life, Dr Adrian Coye, head of cardio thoracic surgery at the KHMH explained that the surgery was made possible through a collaboration with the Rotary gift of Life Program and the Hospital Authority.

According to Dr. Coye there have been an estimated two hundred pacemaker implants done over the past ten years at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
