As was mentioned in the story, several Guatemalan gun boats were seen patrolling near the mouth of the Sarstoon Island. It is presumed that they are in Guatemalan waters. That presumption is based on the equidistance principle. In maritime boundary claims, the equidistance principle is a legal concept that a nation’s maritime boundaries should conform to a median line equidistant from the shores of neighboring nation-states. Commander of the Belize Coast Guard, Admiral John Borland, told the media today that at least one of the gun boats was straddling along the median line.
Unlike, in past instances, today’s event was incident-free.
