Tonight, a Belize City woman is devastated after the Magistrate Court ordered that her Salvadoran husband leave Belize immediately. On Wednesday, 45-year-old Edwin Alfaro was arraigned on immigration offences. Alfaro’s mistake was that he failed to renew his Saldavoran passport while in Belize, as was advised by the Department of Immigration. In failing to do so, Alfaro was deemed as a “prohibited migrant’ and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison. According to Alfaro’s wife, Rosa Hedman, he was told that he needs to leave the country or be deported. Hedman, who is a naturalized Belizean, says Alfaro was at home recovering from injuries he sustained while construction when he was detained by police looking for another man. According to Hedman, Alfaro had begun the process of filling for amnesty but was unable to carry on due to not having the funds to pay for the paperwork.
Hedman, who is a food vendor, says that she hasn’t been able to speak or see Alfaro and is worried because he is very ill. She says she fears that she will never get to see her husband again and is pleading with the authorities to assist her and Alfaro.
