Belize’s Battle Against Coastline Erosion: Adaptation Fund Approves $8 Million Project

A new project approved by the Adaptation Fund is looking to address the issue of coastline erosion in Belize which has been registered as one of the major impacts of climate change. The project, “Enhancing the Resilience of Belize’s Coastal Communities to Climate Change Impacts”, is an eight-million-dollar endeavor, approved at the forty-second meeting of the Adaptation Fund’s Board of Directors. The Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) will be implementing the project which has four major focus areas. Those areas are: improving coastal land use for resilient habitation and sectoral activities; the monitoring of vulnerabilities along the coastline; and coastal protection and adaptation, as well as the response for high-risk areas.  It will also look at visibility, knowledge dissemination, and community engagement. According to the Adaptation fund, the aim is to combine local and national expertise while strengthening capabilities that will result in the longevity of the adaptation benefits. Back in October 2023, Belize had benefited from a ten million dollars from the Fund for climate change adaptation support in Belize.  The Adaptation Fund was established under the 1992 United Nations Convention Framework for Climate Change geared at financing projects that will increase resilience in the most vulnerable countries and communities. Currently, government’s CEO for Sustainable Development and Climate Change, Dr. Kenrick Williams, is a director on the Board representing the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries, (GRULAC).
