The COVID-19 death toll continues to climb as over the Saint George’s Caye Day weekend, nine Belizeans died from the coronavirus bringing the death toll to three hundred and eighty-two persons who have lost the fight against Covid-19. Between Friday and today the Ministry of Health has confirmed an additional three hundred and sixty-two new cases. As a result, active cases now stand at one thousand three hundred and seventy-seven. As for the vaccination update the Ministry of Health did not issue an update on those numbers but up to last Thursday just over 174 thousand had received at least the first jab. Having survived Covid-19 himself, Dr Cuellar says he believes that the vaccination played a key role in his survival. Today, he appeared on The Morning Show and spoke candidly about his hospitalization after he tested positive for COVID-19 on August 20
Dr.Fernando Cuellar, COVID Survivor: “I spent a whole week in the hospital okay? Not a nice thing both the physical part and the mental part. That mental part you hear a lot about it tells on you. And I know of course what’s being given, how it’s given, your IVs, when you can’t get out of bed the Monday and Tuesday and you actually S yourself in the bed and it’s nurses that I know are tending to me helping to get me to the bathroom in time, which didn’t happen at least a couple times, those are not nice things. So I’m here to tell people this is a serious illness. You get sick bad you can die easily okay? This is not a flu, this is not a little cold gone bad, nothing like that okay ? So thankful with the appropriate treatment I spent a week going back to that mental thing maybe four or five days something happened that I said okay – because everybody is telling you to take it easy, don’t worry. Something said to me let us have more of a positive thinking and then I started to realize that mental health thing, that mind over matter so to speak plays a big role. You have to will yourself, you have to push a little bit ‘ I wont’ stay here more days I’ll get better.’ and that actually makes you feel better.”
While he advocates for everyone to get the Covid-19 vaccine, Doctor Cuellar stressed that the vaccine works coupled with precautionary measures such as social distancing, the wearing of masks and even some home remedies.
Dr.Fernando Cuellar, COVID Survivor: “Even now a lot are talking about the vaccine and we’re not talking about the physical or the public health thing which is proper face mask, washing, keep your physical distance and I think that is a mistake of us in the medical community, mistake of government to be – “
Troy Gabb, Host, The Morning Show: Look like we have all our eggs in the vaccine basket.
Dr.Fernando Cuellar, COVID Survivor: “Like we want to vaccinate our way out of this thing and we won’t, the public health measures will help more. That whole thing about physical distancing, not gathering much that goes a long way especially with this delta variant that is so contagious. So again the focus should be on those other things and indeed it came out of the sea in this whole home remedies which is acceptable I will be the first one to tell you that I took it, I think it helps along with the conventional medicine of course.”
Of the new cases reported, one hundred forty-eight was in the Belize District, including one hundred and nine in Belize City. Another one hundred and six were in Cayo District, half of which were in the district’s municipalities of Belmopan, San Ignacio/Santa Elena and Benque Viejo del Carmen.
