Belize’s December 2024 Trade Report: Exports Soar 204% While Imports Remain Steady

Belize’s December 2024 trade data presented a mixed but largely positive economic outlook. Imports saw only a marginal increase of 0.1% compared to December 2023, totaling $230.7 million. While overall growth was minimal, significant shifts occurred in specific commodity categories. Manufactured Goods rose by $5.5 million due to increased imports of construction materials, indicating ongoing infrastructure development. Chemical Products and Machinery & Transport Equipment also experienced gains, reflecting a focus on agriculture and industrial needs. However, some sectors declined, with Commercial Free Zones dropping 21.7% due to lower demand for consumer goods, and Mineral Fuels and Lubricants falling by $3.9 million, driven by reduced fuel imports. The Food and Live Animals category also declined, possibly due to shifting consumer preferences or supply chain disruptions. Meanwhile, Belize’s exports surged dramatically, with total domestic exports reaching $74.1 million, a staggering 204.3% increase from December 2023. This was largely driven by a bulk shipment of sugar, which saw earnings jump to $52.4 million, and citrus exports, which rose five-fold due to increased sales of orange concentrate. Other export categories, such as animal feed and alcoholic beverages, also saw notable gains, highlighting diversification in Belize’s trade portfolio. However, certain industries faced setbacks, with banana exports falling by 14.3% and marine products declining due to reduced sales of lobster and conch. The broader 2024 trade trends indicate continued growth, with total annual merchandise imports reaching $2.909 billion and exports hitting $459.9 million. The United Kingdom emerged as the primary export destination, driven by high sugar demand, while CARICOM markets also expanded. These developments signal strong export potential but also underline challenges in specific sectors that require strategic attention.
