High-ranking officials of Belize’s military forces recently met with counterparts to discuss security in the region. Last week, Minister of National Defence and Border Security Florencio Marin Jr, his Minister of State Oscar Mira, and representatives from the Belize Coast Guard and Belize Defence Force attended the 16 Conference of Defence Ministers of the Americas in Argentina. The event brought together military personnel from 23 countries to discuss and strengthen cooperation on regional security, peace, and mutual support. Belize’s delegation, led by Marin, sought to reinforce Belize’s commitment to UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, which promotes the active role of women in the Belize Armed Forces. The team also emphasized Belize’s focus on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts in the region, stressing the importance of environmental protection as a vital part of national security. Additionally, the delegations reaffirmed Belize’s determination to combat transnational organized crime, working closely with regional partners, and expanding collaboration with CARICOM and the OAS.
