Belize’s Diplomatic Ties with Israel: Minister Fonseca Says Nation Not Ready to Reinstate Yet

When will Belize reinstate diplomatic ties with Israel? In November last year, the government of Belize suspended diplomatic ties with the nation amidst the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Belize’s move was seen as a hardline stance against Israel, but many other nations commended the decision. While the war continues to rage on, many church groups have called for the government to rethink its position. However, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Francis Fonseca says the nation simply isn’t there yet.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade: “Not at this point. You know the decision to suspend relations with Israel was a Cabinet decision that was taken to the Cabinet by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. So if there is any change in that position again it would have to be the Cabinet that would make that decision. So we’re not there yet and things remain the same in terms of Israel at this point.”

Belize also suspended all activities of Belize’s Honorary Consulate in Tel Aviv, Israel.
