Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eamon Courtenay, presented at the United Nation’s General Assembly this past weekend in New York, USA. His 18-minute address touched on several topics ranging from climate change, global finances as well as humanitarian crisis in Haiti. Perhaps the boldest statement made on Saturday was the calling of the United Nation’s Security Council as being ineffective.
Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “Events of the last decade have shown how ineffective the United Nations Security Council is and the dangerous vacuum which arises there from. Threats to international peace and security demand an effective council. One that is inclusive with equitable representation the reflects today’s global dynamics. Mr.President the inability for the council to act in the face of the illegal Russian invasion and the illegal Russian war against Ukraine exemplifies the council’s importance. Reform of the current council is urgent and Belize calls for the commencement of text based negotiations in this session.”
