Belize’s Land Borders to Re-open on January 1

Belize’s land borders will reopen on January 1, 2022. The announcement came just after four o’clock this evening as part of the Cabinet Brief. While the Prime Minister had indicated that this would happen early next year, it is only today that a definitive date had been set. While some would disagree with the government’s decision, there are others who agree that it would benefit the country more than it would harm it. One of those persons is Minister of Tourism, Anthony Mahler.

Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations: “I believe that more variants will come as we move through this covid minefield. We have to learn to live with it. I appeal to everyone to go out and get vaccinated that’s the only weapon that can fight against this and we have to open up the economy. We cannot continue to struggle as a nation. Traffic through the borders represent 20% of our overnight arrivals and so it is important for us to remove some of the barriers to entry and so people can move through the borders freely.”

Belize’s borders have been closed since March 2020 shortly after the first case of Covid-19 was confirmed in the country. Government’s decision to reopen follows consultations with the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
