In September of 2019, the Fisheries Department detected the first case of Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease in Belize. Over two years later and the disease has now spread to various coral colonies across the country. It affects coral species such as brain, pillar, star, and starlet. The cause of the disease is yet to be established. However, according to the Marine Reserves Operations Manager, Alicia Eck-Nunez, The Fisheries Department has been able to find a cure that has proven to be effective.
